JOHANNESBURG – South Africans will have a chance to experience a partial solar eclipse today 0/09/2016 in Johannesburg, the moon is expected to cover only a section of the sun between 9:30am and midday.
Residents have been advised to avoid looking directly at the sun as this may cause permanent damage.
The Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Simphiwe Madlanga explains why our side of the world won’t have a total eclipse.
“In this instance we are in the Southern Hemisphere and the angle is such that we only receive a section of the sunlight. But further North, in terms of the latitude lines, you will get places were there might be a total.”
