Durban – A manhunt is underway for 15 awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped while being transported to prison from court in Durban on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbhele said the incident took place at around 2pm.

The prisoners were being transported back to Westville prison after appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court for various offences, she said.

Police were “transporting 54 prisoners to prison after they appeared in court. [The driver] was approaching red robots and was about to stop when he noticed prisoners coming out of the [vehicle].”

When the driver went out of the vehicle, he noticed that the padlock had been broken, said Mbhele.

Fifteen prisoners escaped and are still on the run. A police task team is investigating the incident.

Of the 15 escapees, 11 are illegal immigrants. The others are facing various charges, including common robbery.

“The police have opened a case of escaping from lawful custody and aiding and abetting a prisoner to escape.”

This happens due to shortage of manpower, police officers are utilized wrongly, police officers being forced to remove bodies from crime scenes because the mortuary workers are striking, we are still being forced to do this and when we refuse, we are threatened with disciplinary action by senior management, this is frustrating members who don’t want to work outside cause they want to avoid such unpleasant duties , our management needs to be exposed for using us , they made agreements with health dept, while officials on the ground must do thei dirty, health Dept must also be exposed, these workers are being paid their full salaries while police officers are doing their work, the mec for health, safety and liaison, police unions should intervene, in order to avoid a situation where police officers start striking, we are already fed up of being used.
Hopefully you will bring this matter to light.

    Thanks
